USUAA met on June 14 in the Lyla Richards Conference Room in the Student Union for one of their regular summer meetings.

The meeting was a hybrid of in person and online. Five members joined the meeting via zoom. Vice President Helena Ballad and Senator Yuki Mustang and USUAA advisor, Zac Clark, were in person.

The meeting was short with no guest speakers or an executive report.

There was a brief discussion about what USUAA would be doing for Campus Kickoff. The dates for their Adopt-A-Road cleaning of 36th Avenue between Lake Otis Parkway and the New Seward Highway were confirmed for June 28, July 26 and Aug. 23 following their regularly scheduled meetings.

Clark gave an update on activities happening on campus and in Anchorage related to Pride Month and Juneteenth.

Clark said that the Sunshine and Sandwiches Pride Party, which celebrates Pride Month at UAA, would be taking place later that afternoon at 4 p.m. The event would start at the Pride Center and involve a short walk around campus, followed by food.

On Thursday there would be a screening of the movie “Long Island Divided” at 4 p.m. in the Student Union Den. The movie looks at racial discrimination in housing in Long Island.

Over the weekend, Clark said that members of Student Engagement and Inclusion would be downtown on the Delaney Park Strip running a table at Anchorage’s Juneteenth Celebration.

He said there were specially made Juneteenth t-shirts that they would be handing out.

On Monday, the actual day of the holiday, Clark said that there would be a celebration put on by UAA outside of the Fine Arts Building with free food starting at 4 p.m. followed by closing ceremonies of Anchorage’s Junteenth festivities later in the evening in room 150 of the Fine Arts Building.

Clark said that the regular Wild Scoop Wednesday had been paused for the day, but would return the following Wednesday, the 21st, in the Cuddy Quad.

Clark said there were some student organizations active on campus, including KRUA. He also said that the landscape and grounds department had gotten followers planted around campus, including in the 50th anniversary flower bed.

USUAA’s next scheduled meeting is on June 28 at 1 p.m. and can be attended in person in the Lyla Richards Conference Room in the Student Union or online via zoom. Links to their meeting and previous recordings can be found on their facebook page.
