Beyond the Campaign: Dr. Matt Heilala

Republican governor candidate and retired 30-year podiatrist Dr. Matt Heilala joined the gubernatorial race in July 2025. He spoke with The Northern Light to discuss his journey to the campaign trail.

“My wife and I got married early,” Heilala said. After 36 years of marriage, he says his wife is his pillar. Outside of his campaign, Heilala enjoys spending time with his child and four grandchildren. According to Heilala, he also uses faith as a framework for day-to-day life.

Heilala recalled his time in the private sector. “I have learned that you can’t lead by pointing fingers.” He has spent over 45 years in the private sector. His work includes founding Alaska Foot and Ankle Specialists, which has merged with Orthopedic Physicians Alaska. He also spent time as a commercial fisherman and investing in healthcare infrastructure. 

“My presentation has changed, but my words have remained the same,” said Heilala. “Politicians keep making empty promises. Alaskans and I call for a different system.”

“There are candidates who are too old and too young. We need Goldilocks. Find the perfect middle.”
