Former Alaska Gov. Bill Walker is on the ballot for the August gubernatorial primary. He served as governor from 2014 to 2018. In an interview with The Northern Light, Walker discussed what he learned from his first term in office.
Walker said he is an Independent and believes it is important to work with both parties.
“I hate the discrimination with parties. I am not left or right leaning, I am leaning forward.”
He said he plans to build relationships within the Anchorage community that will allow him to work closely with the Legislature to address Alaska needs and prioritize Alaskans.
Walker talked about the 20-year relationship between him and his running mate, Randy Hoffbeck. Walker said he knows Hoffbeck well and is confident they make a good team. Walker said they share beliefs in morals, political stances and Christianity. He said they will be able to hold each other accountable morally and politically.
Walker said the campaign trail has limited his exposure to nature and his grandson’s soccer games. Despite spending less time on his hobbies or family activity, he remains focused on what Alaska needs. On his days off, Walker said he spends time outdoors, doing construction and woodworking.
