Red Zone

The phrase “Red Zone” refers to the first six to eight weeks of college where sexual assault has a higher chance of occuring than usual.

According to John Hopkins University, “50% of sexual assaults that occur on college campuses occur during the Red Zone.” As students go through new experiences and more independence, they may encounter social situations and environments where sexual assault and harrassment remains a serious concern.

The Northern Light spoke with University Police Department Chief Jeff Earle about the Red Zone.

“Many students are leaving home for the first time. We do our best to educate students about being safe,” Earle said. “We work with a variety of different departments.” 

Earle recommended seeking material to deepen safety knowledge, such as not going out alone and monitoring your senses while drinking for any changes. An article posted by Battered Women’s Justice Project wrote that a plan for the night should always be established.

Since Aug. 24, there has been one reported sexual assault and three reported stalking cases at UAA. Not all incidents are reported to authorities.

UAA’s Student Health and Counseling Center offers low-cost therapy, sexual health testing, physical exams and other support systems. 

Stand Together Against Rape (S.T.A.R). also provides a free and confidential crisis line available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
