Traditional healer and educator Meda DeWitt, announced her run campaign for governor as a nonpartisan candidate in February. DeWitt spoke with The Northern Light about her responsibilities as a healer and potential state leader.
DeWitt said she has a responsibility to share her knowledge with her community as a healer. DeWitt said there is a long history of healers in her family. She is a member of the Naanya.aayí clan in Wrangell, where she learned to be a healer under her grandfather, often studying plants to use as medicine.
“What I learn, I share,” DeWitt said.
She earned a master’s degree from Alaska Pacific University with a specialization in traditional healing and has completed over 200 credits across multiple science departments.
DeWitt is the president of Yak-Tat Kwaan Inc. and is working on several projects. She said much of her work has focused on turning the company into a holistic business model that can lay an economic foundation for the organization.
DeWitt said that the country’s political parties have become divided and that her commitment is not to a single party, but to Alaska.
