Matanuska-Susitna Borough mayor Edna DeVries announced her campaign for governor in June 2025 and has remained in the race as a Republican candidate. DeVries shared her passion for transparency with The Northern Light.
DeVries said she decided to run for governor because she believes the Matanuska-Susitna Borough needs advocacy at the state level. She also believes that it is important for Alaskans to stay informed, which is why she is making government transparency an essential part of her campaign.
Outside of politics, DeVries and her husband work with several ministries to help abuse survivors and those experiencing homelessness. Before launching her gubernatorial campaign, DeVries was a real estate agent for 30 years.
DeVries has held many political offices throughout her career, including serving in the Alaska Senate from 1985 to 1987. She said she has consistently advocated for local economic development.
DeVries also continues to lead the School of Government in Alaska, which DeVries and her husband, Noel DeVries, founded in 2022. She serves as the ceremonial head and the presiding officer.
The program aims to educate people on political topics, with guest speakers such as Sharon Jackson and Jim Minnery. DeVries believes that community ties and engagement are important when running for any political office. “Community is what Alaska is,” DeVries stated.
