Since Sept. 6, Chuck Knepfle has been working as UAA’s new Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. Knepfle spoke with The Northern Light about his prior experience and current goals for UAA.

Knepfle said his interest in the role originated from wanting to assist students throughout their academic journey. He added, “The appeal of this job is that it is focused on students from the beginning of their career here to their own end goal, whether that be getting college credit, credentials or graduating.”

Knepfle said he felt former Interim Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Tom Greene aimed to provide a job that fit Knepfle’s goals and standards. “I have known Tom for a while, so there was trust built that he wasn’t trying to just sell me the job.”

Knepfle drew parallels between him and Greene, and said that they both share a common goal of improving the current system. “My goal is to get more Alaskans graduated. When they’re here, I want them to have a better experience. They are my first, second and third reason for being here,” said Knepfle.

Knepfle said he hopes to improve the overall student experience by maintaining UAA’s mission regarding student persistence, retention  and graduation rates.

He said that he plans to be an active part of the UAA community, and has already attended several on-campus events.

For those who would like to learn more about Knepfle and the university, Knepfle said, “come talk to me.”

Knepfle’s email can be found in the University of Alaska directory.
