UCreate Media Camp is a summer camp put on by UAA’s department of Journalism and Public Communications in collaboration with Alaska Teen Media Institute. From June 5 to June 9, campers learn about audio, video and image production in addition to story telling and graphic design. The camp is being hosted by the College of Arts and Sciences at UAA.
UAA’s student newspaper, The Northern Light, is assisting in running the camp and hosting projects that campers make. You can see what the campers have come up with here.
My name is Andrei Aquino, or AJ, I want to make videos about my passions, which are mainly planes and cars. I started to like planes when 6th grade of 2021-2022 started, I had read about the story the Red Baron in a book that I had found in the class room, and that had sparked the love for aircraft, and I went from a DIY plane that flew ten feet, to a plane that flew until it’s battery was dead, and I did that in three months, and after that happened, the love for aircraft that I had spread like wild fire. In 2023 is when the size of planes I flew really grew, they went from one ½ feet to a meter, then one ½ meters, and then 2 meters, but then the growth of my aircraft just stopped, then one day came, I saw a wooden strip in our garage, and the size of planes that I flew went from 2 meters, to 4 ½ meters, and the weight of my largest plane went from 5-6 pounds to 12-14 pounds! Around the time I was finishing 7th grade, I had become glued to this British car show called Top Gear, and this show just sparked another fire that started to compete with my love for planes, and eventually, they just evened out. The first car that I ever loved was the Meyers Manx Beach Buggy, you would take an old Beetle, and remove the body, and put on this beautiful fiber glass body, and then you would just take it to the dunes. As my love for cars progressed I started to love the younger brother to the Meyers Manx, the Baja Bug, basically taking a Beetle and making it more off road capable, bigger tires, lifting the car, adding more horse power, but still keeping the original body. I want to create media about these passions that I have because they need more exposure right now, the rc plane hobby could be in big trouble, from new FAA regulations, to how long it takes to fly without assistance. Along with the rc plane problem, Volkswagen announced that they would be ending production of the Beetle in 2019, and the baja bugs now have to face competition from modern buggies and ATVs that you don’t have to build. I want to do this so that when the people already doing this are gone, there hobbies and even livelihoods are still kicking.
