Several bookshelves at the UAA Consortium Library will remain temporarily empty as staff rearrange collections.
Head of Access Services Lorelei Sterling said journal collections were relocated from the first floor to four areas around the library due to on-going construction of the Alaska Leaders Archive.
She said the library had an option of moving the collections to the University Center or keeping them on-site with additional shelving.
“We're not getting rid of anything,” said Sterling. “In terms of service and access to the collections, it's better if they're in the building and not somewhere off-site.”
Sterling said, “We have been compressing our general collection, so it takes up a little bit less space on the shelves, so that we can get our journals back into other places that already have shelving.”
She said library materials are often moved around for various reasons, including the increasing size of collections.
Renovations related to the Alaska Leaders Archive will impact the library’s north entry until late 2026, according to previous reporting by The Northern Light.
