Bill Hill is an Independent candidate running for Alaska’s seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Hill spoke with The Northern Light about his conviction to be a trusted representative for Alaska.
Hill grew up in a small village in Bristol Bay; he worked on his family’s drift boat at 8 years old using a net to catch fish. At the age of 12, he began commercial fishing. Hill also raised and raced sled dog teams. He went on to graduate from UAA with a bachelor’s degree in education and his master’s in education administration from the University of Phoenix.
Hill worked as a superintendent across several districts throughout his career. Hill spent time in Juneau as a middle school teacher and worked with legislators on education issues. Although he currently has no meetings scheduled with the different Alaska colleges, he hopes to talk with them soon.
Hill has also worked in construction and with the Laborers Union. “Our political system is represented by people from high finance, people who are career politicians and people who have a long history in the legal fields,” said Hill. “I think the Alaska people resonate with someone who understands their life.”
Hill said he believes that it takes a hard worker to represent the hard workers of Alaska. If elected, Hill said he plans to travel from Washington D.C. to Alaska often to stay connected to the people of Alaska.
Hill said that while he has not had a day off in some time, he’s enjoyed politics and political discussion after his campaign launch in January. Hill said, “politics are new to me, so who I am is outside of it. Alaska is who I am.”
