The Alaska Writer’s Guild hosted their annual conference for writers and illustrators at UAA’s Administration and Humanities Building on Sept. 18-19.
The conference was held in partnership with the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), Alaska Romance Writers and UAA’s Department of Writing.
The all-day conference consisted of panels, workshops and breakout sessions that covered subjects related to writing, peer-editing and publishing.
Attendees could submit either the first 500 words of a written project for a 10-minute roundtable review, or submit the first five pages of a manuscript for a 15-minute one-on-one critique session.
The critiquing faculty this year included Jenny Xu, a senior editor with Atria Books, Aevitas Creative Management literary agent Maggie Cooper, and Sean McCarthy, a literary agent and founder of his own literary agency.
A juried art show contest was held for illustrators to show their work to potential editors, agents and authors.
Juried art show entrants were expected to follow a prompt, which wrote, “It made her think that it was curious how much nicer a person looked when he smiled. She had not thought of it before.”
