UA dial-up dropped

More than 800 members of the UA community will no longer be connected to the Internet via the dial-up service through the school as of Dec. 31. Alternatives to provide students with Internet service at considerably discounted rates are in the works. A discounted promotion at ACS is currently available. Details can be found online at the ACS Web site. For on-campus dial-up locations, such as the Main Apartment Complex, a new DSL-based broadband solution will be installed before the cut-off date. Information on future plans will be posted at alaska.edu/its/projects/dialup.

King crowned at UAA pool tournament

Nineteen contestants participated in the Student Union Pool Tournament Nov. 10. The event was open to all UAA students and staff and many showed up to watch contestants and to participate in the tournament, which ran from 7-10 p.m. Zak King, who won the single-elimination tournament, received an intstructional pool videotape as a prize. USUAA vice president Michael Blanton placed second in the tournament. See page 12 for photos of the event.

Bookstore offers Christmas deals

The UAA Campus Bookstore is offering free gift wrapping and free mailing in the U.S. this semester as the holidays approach and Christmas shoppers search for the perfect gifts. The promotion is available for any regular price item purchased at the bookstore. Students can also save 10 percent on clothing per can per can of donated food, up to 30 percent, as part of the Food Bank of Alaska’s annual food drive rive.

High school seniors explore campus

Local seniors and their parents will be touring campus this week as part of the Fall Preview Day, designed to familiarize students with the campus, and the programs and social activities offered. After an opening from Chancellor Elaine P. Maimon, seniors will attend a variety of mock-college classes, parent questions and answer panels, questions and answer panels with current UAA students, a campus tour, degree fair, and club and activity booths. Purchases made at the bookstore during Fall Preview Day will be discounted as well.
