Professors participate in BizBee
The UAA BizBee team, Word Wizards, competed Friday at the Anchorage Hilton ballroom but lost its 2003 championship title. Professors Toby Widdicombe, Chuck Beirnard and Robin Crittenden of the English Department, and Steve Rollins, dean of the Consortium Library, formed the team. UAA basketball coach Rusty Osborne timed the competition in front of paying spectators, with the Alaska Library Association taking the top spot. The BizBee competition benefited the Anchorage Literacy Project, which helps people in the city to learn to read.
UAA rink closed until spring
The UAA Web site reported Wednesday that the Wells Fargo Sports Complex ice rink will be closed through March of next year for continued refrigeration repairs. The upgrade will be the first since the 1979 opening of the rink, and costs are estimated to reach between $400,000 and $600,000. The project includes replacing all the piping, upgrading compressors and redesigning the refrigeration. The Seawolf hockey team will relocate its practices.
Bragaw extension in works
In a recent public meeting at Service High School, the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities proposed extending Abbott Loop Road to Bragaw on the other side of town. The project, paid for with state bonds, will include bridges over the North and South forks of Campbell Creek, intersection improvements, separated pathways and turning lanes, according to the project Web site. The department laid out project design and construction schedules from DOWL Engineers. Several similar meetings have been held since September 2003 and opinions are mixed, but open comments and documentation are available on the project Web site.
