I must have done something right somewhere along the line, because “Karma” from Avery Brewing Co. definitely treated me well. While the official categorization of “Karma” subscribes it to a variety of Belgian style, my personal, unscientific assessment of this ale would place it somewhere along the lines of a cider-ale hybrid.
First off, “Karma” comes out a cloudy, rusty burnt gold, reminiscent of a light apple cider.
Next, the aroma wafts up with a strong overtone of – what else? – apples.
And the apple notes continue throughout the entire ale, combining on the first sip with a medium sourness that finishes in the end with a mild touch of hops.
And, over all these characteristics, “Karma” possesses a sharp carbonation that bites the tongue leaving the taste buds open for the symphony of flavors that follows.
“Karma” is crisp, full flavored and refreshing, a true homage to the popular moral concept, of which I think even Earl Hickey might approve.
