Enlaces makes efforts to get the Latino votes before the November election

The Latino community is very prominent in Anchorage and has been growing each year. With the presidential election coming in November, many community members have come together to remind Latinos to get registered to vote. Latinos make up about 5.5% of the population in Alaska. Having their voice be heard could make a difference in this election.

Enlaces AK is a non-profit organization that emphasizes empowering, educating and engaging the Latino community. They have started a digital campaign called “En Alaska si Vota” which translates to “In Alaska we Vote.” The goal of this movement is to encourage Latinos to register to vote. They have put an emphasis on engaging with young Latinos, who might be voting for the first time. Lina Maruscal, a business owner, volunteers for En Alaska si Vota and is also an active member in the Anchorage Latino community.

“We want to make sure that it’s not just about voting, but that it’s about having your voice being heard,” Maruscal said.

Enlaces AK is doing this digital campaign through Instagram and Facebook. The campaign involves people taking pictures with themselves holding up a sign that reads “La Razón Por La Que Voto Es…” and writing down what they are voting for. There is also an English version that reads: “The reason for which I am voting is…”. The campaign has also posted pictures of signs around Anchorage that read “Votar es Poder!” which translates to “Voting is Power!” The official En Alaska si Vota Instagram page has over 80 posts with the hashtag AlaskaVota.
