Part of my generosity with my rating of “OAKED Arrogant Bastard” (four stars rather than three) has simply to do with the ale being arrogant enough to live up to its own name.
Now, typically it is not my practice to sign off on an individual who is unapologetically a “bastard”, but since this ale’s brewers are up front about the libation’s disposition I’ll grant it a nod (for their creativity if nothing else). “OAKED Arrogant Bastard” is a spinoff of a staple from Stone Brewing Co. bearing the same name minus the emphasized adjective, that adjective drawing attention to the fact that this strain is aged with American oak wood chips.
In a nutshell this ale is a heavy hitter, although it might not hit immediately. For myself, I identified a noticeable delay in the extreme wave of hops that envelops the entire tongue just after the swallow. Oddly enough, this is an ale that becomes more flavorful as you go. After the tongue is benumbed to the hops, one begins to pick up on the subtle tastes that linger underneath “OAKED Arrogant Bastard’s” initial, overbearing characteristic.
