UAA puts 5 on MPSF Academic squad

Five Alaska Anchorage gymnasts were honored for their classroom success Tuesday as the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation announced its 2009 Women’s Gymnastics All-Academic Team.
Sophomore Kristy Boswell led the way for UAA with the third-highest overall grade-point average among the league’s 18 honorees, earning a 3.72 as an undeclared major. The Cherry Hill, N.J., native also recently captured the MPSF uneven bars title in helping UAA to the championship at last month’s conference meet.
Joining Boswell on the all-academic squad were three second-time honorees – juniors Lauren Agostino (Virginia Beach, Va., 3.37, physical education), Meagan Byrne (Arcadia, Calif., 3.32, biological sciences), and Courtney Williams (San Angelo, Texas, 3.22, elementary education) – along with sophomore Maria Puricelli (Chesterfield, Mo., 3.13, undeclared).
To be eligible, a student-athlete must carry a 3.0 or better cumulative GPA, be in at least her second season, and compete in at least 50 percent of meets. As such, the Seawolves qualified five or their six eligible student-athletes.
