Junior Mariesha Harris, former guard at Wabash Valley College in Mt. Carmel, Ill., is one of the newest recruits to the UAA basketball team.
Harris was brought on as new head coach Ryan McCarthy’s first addition to the team, which went 30-5 last year and made it to the NCAA Div. ll Elite Eight quarterfinals.
At the NJCAA All-Region 24, Harris averaged 6.7 points, 5.0 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game, and in two years played on a team with a 49-15 overall record, winning back-to-back Great Rivers Athletic Conference titles.
McCarthy said assistant coach RyAnne Ridge has been scouting Harris for a while.
“She’s from one of the toughest JuCo leagues in the country,” he said Saturday.
The Seawolves also recruited sophomore center Lize Teilane from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami, Okla.
Last season, Teilane averaged 1.6 points, 0.3 assists, 2.83 rebounds, 0.1 steals per game.
But these players may not be the last of the additions to the team.
Walk-on tryouts will be held from 6-8 p.m. Sunday.
McCarthy said attendees must have proof of acceptance to the university and a sports physical form from within the past six months.
He said the team will be at the tryouts to run through drills and scrimmage with the potential teammates.
“We’re just kind of going to see what’s out there,” McCarthy said.
