This week will find the Seawolves hockey team hosting the University of Denver Pioneers here at the Sullivan Arena. The Pioneers have a record so far this season of 4-2-0 going into their two home games against Minnesota State on Oct. 30 and 31.
Last year the Pioneers finished with a record of 23-12-5. They had an average of 3.3 goals per game and a shot percentage of .105.

Head coach George Gwozdecky is in his 16th season with the team, having lead them to two NCAA titles. This season the Pioneers return 21 letter winners from last year’s team that finished second in the WCHA.

“We are certainly looking forward to this season, our players and staff have worked extremely hard to prepare for the many challenges this year. Our first goal is to become a team, since we have seven newcomers joining our program,” says coach Gwozecky.

Players to watch out for off the Pioneers would be senior forwards Rhett Rakhshani and Tyler Ruegsegger, along with junior goaltender Marc Cheverie. “Rhett and Tyler are two of the most talented forwards in collegiate hockey. They are model student-athletes and we’re excited to have them lead our team this season.”

Rakhshani bypassed a chance to sign with the NHL’s New York Islanders to return as team captain for his final collegiate season. Coach Gwozdecky says, “Rakhshani is a dynamic forward who surpassed the coveted 100-point barrier as a junior last season.”

The Seawolves are 3-3-0 as of Oct. 29 with games against Minnesota over the past weekend. The Pioneers already played two games against the Golden Gophers and came out victorious in both games with a score or 3-0 in both.
