Say What?

Mama’s milk ice cream cone, anyone?

WATERBURY, Vt. – Mooove over, Holsteins. PETA wants world-famous Ben & Jerry’s Homemade Ice Cream to tap nursing moms, rather than cows, for the milk used in its ice cream.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is asking the ice cream maker to begin using breast milk in its products instead of cow’s milk, saying it would reduce the suffering of cows and calves and give ice cream lovers a healthier product.

The idea got a cool reception Sept 25 from Ben & Jerry’s officials, the company’s customers and even La Leche League International, the world’s oldest breast-feeding support organization, which promotes the practice – for babies, anyway.

Ben & Jerry’s, which gets its milk exclusively from Vermont cows, won’t say how much milk it uses or how much ice cream it sells.

As a standardized product under federal regulations, ice cream must be made with milk from healthy cows. Ice cream made from goat’s milk, for example, would have to be labeled as such.

Presumably, so would mother’s milk ice cream. To Ben & Jerry’s, the idea is udderly ridiculous.

A face from ears: Palin is carved into cornfield

WHITEHOUSE, Ohio – An Ohio farmer would like to invite you to get lost inside the head of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

A 16-acre corn maze near the town of Whitehouse has been carved in Palin’s likeness, complete with her familiar updo hairstyle and eyeglasses.

Farmer Duke Wheeler says that Palin created a lot of excitement in the campaign and that he was hoping to generate some for this year’s maze.

Wheeler says it took an artist from Idaho at least eight hours to mow down stalks for the maze.

Teen OK after being impaled by deer antlers

OMAHA, Neb. – A 16-year-old teenager is recovering after falling and impaling himself on a set of deer antlers in Carter Lake, Iowa. Todd Reynolds’ grandmother said the teen was climbing through a window in her home Wednesday after locking himself out when he fell onto the antlers.

The antlers stabbed him in the back and just missed his spine.

The grandmother, Jeanne Reynolds, said the antlers were on the floor. She had saved them from a deer that her car crashed into some years ago.

Emergency room doctors removed the antlers Wednesday. The teen was out of the hospital and expected him to recover.

Japan holds diaper fashion show – for adults

TOKYO – One after the other, the models strutted across the stage to bouncy ’80s dance tunes, all showing off designs of the same article of clothing – adult diapers.

Japan has one of the world’s most rapidly aging societies, and the fashion show Thursday proved the country’s diaper producers are intent on keeping the elderly clean and dry.

“Diapers are something that people don’t want to look at,” said Kiyoko Hamada of the Aging Lifestyle Research Center, a leading organizer of the show.

“But if you make them attractive, then people can learn about them more easily,” she said.

Indeed, adult diapers are an increasingly common item in Japan, home to one of the world’s longest average lifespans. More than 20 percent of the population is over 65, and the country is forecast to have the globe’s largest number of centenarians – 1 million – by 2050, the U.N. says.
