Alaska Quarterly Review celebrates 25 years

Alaska Quarterly Review, published by the University of Alaska Anchorage, will celebrate 25 years of literary excellence at a birthday celebration on Sunday, Feb. 3, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Loussac Library. The celebration will kick off a month-long photo exhibit featuring the works of 15 photographers and contributors to AQR, including the late Sam Kimura. A cake-cutting ceremony will be held at 1:30 p.m., and guests will enjoy the music of guitarist Karl Wilhelmi. This event is free and open to the public.

Showcase features students’ best work

The UAA Student Showcase Release Reception will honor students who presented their work and those who were selected to receive awards. Work highlighted includes extraordinary, original papers and projects created by UAA students. The reception is Tuesday, Jan. 29, from 2:30-3:30 p.m. at the UAA Bookstore. Pick up a journal of the selected student works and enjoy refreshments.

The deadline for the next round of submissions is Wednesday, Feb. 6. The selected works are presented, and community members are invited to offer their critique and comments. Awards for top papers and projects include, publication in the 2008 Student Showcase Journal, $200 cash and a $50 UAA Bookstore gift certificate.
