'Symphony of Sounds'supports scholarships

UAA Department of Music presents the fifth annual “Symphony of Sounds” college scholarship-fundraising concert at 8 p.m. on Feb. 23 and 24 in the Arts building Recital Hall. The concert is open to all ages with music including classical jazz, large ensembles, and soloists. The concert will play continuously without applause, allowing musical contrasts and energy to be built collectively. The presentation of the annual college scholarship-fund raising concert hopes to expand the Department of Music and provide opportunities for students to study music at UAA. All proceeds from the “Symphony of Sounds” go into the UAA Department of Music scholarship fund. Ticket prices are $20 for the balcony and $15 for the main floor, with $3 discounts for students, seniors, and military. Tickets are available through CARRS TIX and the UAA Arts building Ticket Office.

Alaska courts seek child advocates

The Alaska Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program needs volunteers to help abused, neglected, and abandoned children during their court cases. Duties include researching case files, representing the child's best interests throughout the trial and ensuring a swift and fair conclusion. CASA will provide free training and no experience is required. Those interested must first attend a one-hour informational meeting before training in April. Training will be held Tuesdays and Saturdays for ten hours a week from April 3 to 24. For more information, call the Office of Public Advocacy at 269-3500.
