Authors speak on life and literature at Bookstore
The UAA bookstore has been hosting authors to come in and speak about their books and the subjects included within them. Kaylene Johnson, the author of Sarah Palin's latest biography, came in to talk about what went into writing the book and her experiences with the Alaska governor. The book is titled "Sarah: How a Hockey Mom Turned Alaska's Political Establishment Upside Down."
The following week, two out of the three main authors of the "Traditional Food Guide for Alaska Native Cancer Survivors" came to talk about what the food guide has done for Natives struggling with or recovering from cancer. Karen Mitchell and Desiree Simeon presented a slide show on the book's contents and how it worked. They expressed that the book had given hope to many Alaska Natives who had previously felt lost and frustrated with the new diets recommended to battle their cancer. The book is quickly turning into an icon for Alaska cancer patients.
Static Cycle release party rocks the house at UAA
The 100-percent-local band Static Cycle just released their first album with a concert at UAA's own Wendy Williamson Auditorium. While the CD is not for sale in any retail stores yet, it can be picked up at any of their concerts, frequently played in the Anchorage area. The CD is a must-have for any fans of alternative rock, although the group's style is heavier than most alternative groups, making for a refreshing change on the local music scene. Keep an eye out for a Static Cycle concert and decide for yourself if they're the real deal or not.
