Most people prefer holidays to land on a weekend. Unfortunately, this year's freaky festival falls on Tuesday.
But just because Halloween is on the second day of the working week doesn't mean one can't have a good time. Many bars, clubs and malls are hosting events all through the previous weekend as well as Halloween night.
The fun starts on Friday, Oct. 27, with a special Halloween showing of "Rosemary's Baby" put on by Bear Tooth Theatre Pub at 10:15 p.m. The feature also plays on Saturday at the same time.
The Dimond Center will host a haunted house from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27 and Saturday, Oct. 28, and on Sunday, Oct. 29, from 7-9 p.m. The house will be open on weekdays as well; the final day of the haunted house will be Halloween night.
The UAA Anime Club hosts a "Halloween Cosplay Night" on Friday Oct. 27, in Rasmuson Hall Room 117. There will be three Halloween shows and prizes for the best costume.
The International Gallery of Contemporary Art holds its annual Halloween fundraiser on Saturday. It features classic apple-dunking, pumpkin-carving and costume contests. They will also have live music, poetry readings and performance art, along with a silent auction of art by local visual artists.
Also on Saturday, the UAA Club Council, along with the Student Union, UAA Athletic Department and Campus Life, hosts the Halloween Fun Festival for children ages two to 12. It starts at 4:30 p.m. and will go until 9 p.m. The fun will include tons of carnival games.
For those who are 21 and older, there are plenty of bars and nightclubs hosting Halloween events throughout the weekend.
Mad Myrna's is full of buzz with their showing of "Little Shop of Horrors," which has been featured since September and will have its finale October 28. A costume contest will follow the finale. The best "Rocky Horror Picture Show" look-alikes will win free tickets to Mad Myrna's return of the "Rocky Horror Picture Show," which starts in November.
Humpy's Great Alaskan Alehouse will have a costume contest, a live band and party favors on Saturday night.
Chilkoot Charlie's is having a Halloween Bash on Friday, Saturday and Halloween night. Nine Inch Manson will perform live. Like last year, Koot's will have the famous suspension put on by Body Piercing Unlimited, as well as a spanking booth.
As for Halloween night, there's plenty going on Oct. 31 even though it's a Tuesday.
Snow City Cafe welcomes all costume-wearers between 7 a.m. and 3 pm.
The Dimond Center will have games and costume contests for all ages from 5-8 p.m. throughout the mall. The Northway Mall starts their "Northway Mall-o-ween" at 5 p.m., featuring events such as a haunted house, face painting, costume contests judged by the public, pumpkin carving contests and trick or treating. They also end their night at 8 p.m.
And if one has never seen a tiger's fang gleam in the moonlight, a good opportunity awaits at The Alaska State Zoo's annual "Zoo-Boo" Halloween celebration and trick-or-treating event from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
