Crime scene expert and innovator discusses forensics in Alaska

Some recognize George Taft as a bronze bust at the Anchorage Trooper Museum. Taft presented a PowerPoint presentation in the UAA Consortium Library on Wednesday, Sept. 13, about his inventions in forensic technology in Alaska. He is the co-author of the textbook "Forensic Science Today," which takes a scientific approach to the study of forensics. Taft has been hailed as a remarkable man for his accomplishments in the field. Topics discussed included career choices and what can be done about the reduction of crime in Alaska.

Audience judges films in Manhattan Short Film Festival

"Cigarette Box," "Lyra Lezana" and "3rd Parent" are just some of the short films featured at Out North Theatre, which started on Thursday Sept. 16 through Sunday. The audience participated in judging several creative short films from many countries, including Israel, Germany, Australia, United Kingdom, Spain, Poland and the U.S. Each film was limited to about 10 minutes or less. The films were screened at Out North and 67 other venues around Europe, Canada and the U.S. The tickets were $6 online and $9 at the door. The winner will be announced on Sept. 24 in New York and will be awarded resources to help make the winning short film into a full-length feature.

Guitarist Rick Brooks brings jazz, classical and blues to UAA

Noon Music feature artist Rick Brooks jammed out with his guitar on Wednesday in the Student Union. He's been playing guitar since the age of eight. Since then he's been touring the west coast and playing for his first national radio audience on West Coast €" Live. Brooks has been working on his upcoming CD while giving guitar workshops. He plays a variety of acoustic instrumentals including jazz, classical, blues and even British folk tunes
