Local riders competed with out-of-towners at the 2006 Red Bull Fuel and Fury freestyle snowmachine competition at the Alyeska Ski Resort in Girdwood April 9-15.

This year, people voted for their favorite performer after watching video footage online. At previous competitions, held in Wisconsin and Wyoming, judges picked their favorite based on photos taken at the competition.

Chris Burandt, a freestyle snowmachiner from Kremmling, Colo., took home the $7,000 first-place prize, which he shared with his cinematographer Rich Van Every. It was the second time in a row that Burandt won at the best-overall freestyle snowmachiner.

"I wanted to portray how much fun we were having," Burandt said after Fuel and Fury.

His video consisted of camping comedy, technical hill climbs and jumps that ran 212 feet through the air.

Van Every said he enjoyed editing three hours of original film down to less than five minutes for the Internet. He said numerous overcast days made it difficult to shoot good footage, but he managed to get the best footage at Squirrel Flats and Turnagain Pass on the last day of the competition.
