There have been 11 budget requests made by clubs. Rep. Jessica Armstrong said most of the clubs are requesting about $2,000. Club Council has approximately $7,000 in its budget.
More than half the attendees of the Michael Ian Black event on Feb. 17 were UAA students. Concert Board has approximately $6,000 in its special projects account. Sen. Jonathan Wilcox, Concert Board representative, encouraged senators to spread word about the money to other students who might have ideas for special events. Concert Board is also fielding suggestions for new performers.
Government Relations Director
Regan Mattingly said a UAA delegation advocated funding for an expansion of the engineering degrees to include civil and mechanical engineering, a new Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program building and a new science building at the Alaska Legislative Conference in Juneau last weekend.
Chris Hall, student body president, said the UAA delegation to the Coalition of Student Leaders was fully present. Hall said the Alaska Commission on Post-Secondary Education is also preparing to distribute $600,000 in grants to Alaska college students. Hall said these grants are the beginning of a need-based financial aid program in Alaska. Richard Benavides, USUAA president in 1995, spoke briefly with senators about working as a legislative aide for Sen. Bettye Davis and about the different funding requests made by the UAA delegation at the legislative conference.
Persons to be Heard Not on the Agenda
Barry Piser, editor in chief of the Northern Light, requested USUAA consider sponsoring an event to improve fan support at the UAA vs. UAF men’s basketball game Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. Piser said the athletic department and Uncle Joe’s Pizzeria donated T-shirts to distribute at the event and the Northern Light is donating promotional space.
The next USUAA rotating table will be in the Social Sciences Building or Cuddy Center March 4.
The rules committee has assessed the absences accumulated by current senators.
“Some of us are walking a thin red line,” committee co-chair Damjan Jutric said. Jutric said it was not too late for senators to submit absence excuse forms for recent absences.
$350 from the promotional budget was allocated for sponsoring a tailgate party before the Feb. 26 UAA vs. UAF men’s basketball game at 7 p.m. in the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
