Meet UAA’s new senate

The Union of Students at UAA announced its senate election results prior to Thanksgiving break.

More than 300 students went to the polls and voted on a ballot with seven unopposed candidates and multiple write-ins for student government’s senate.

The seven elected senators for 2007-08 are Karl Wing, Ashley Hice, Zachary Liszka, Lorena Nay, Joel Carrick, Kelcie Ralph and Marcus Welker.

Meet the fresh senate through their prepared statements, according to the USUAA Election Board:

Karl Wing

Who he is:

“I am a born and raised Alaskan. Throughout the course of my life, voluntary community service has been one of my passions. Five semesters I’ve been giving my all to formulating policy for USUAA, and I’ve been serving greater Anchorage in various civic projects for several years. I ran cross country for UAA, and last summer I biked a 410-mile trip from Anchorage to Homer and back. I held numerous positions, including president, in my high school student government. I have put in more than 2,600 hours of service in student government at UAA and in the greater Anchorage area.”

His campaign promises are:

“I will continue to strengthen your voice through student government by working to advocate the Legislature for UAA capital projects and to freeze tuition. I want to make parking and on-campus dining options more accommodating. Improving student activities for students such that UAA people would consider campus a place for pastime and leisure is very important.”

Ashley Hice

Who she is:

“I graduated from Bartlett High School with a degree of distinction from National Forensic League for my participation in debate, drama and forensics.
