Letters to the Editor

Choice of cover photo was disappointing

I would like to preface this by saying that in no way am I trying to dog the boys’ basketball team or all the hard work that they put in.

On the front page of the Nov. 27 issue there is a huge picture with a caption above it that says, “Men’s Seawolf team struggles, takes last in Shootout.” On the front page of the B or Motion section there are pictures with the caption “UAA women take second consecutive Shootout victory.” Am I the only one that sees something wrong with this? Why is it that our winning team is demoted to the “B” or Motion section of the paper? I would think that if you win, especially something as big as the Shootout for two years running, you would be front-page news. So why is it the boys’ basketball team, which didn’t win a single game, is on the very front page – while our Shootout champs, the girls’ team, is demoted to first page of the B section?

Let’s face it: The newspaper puts on the front page the stuff that it thinks will catch the most attention and readers. The less important an article is, the farther back in the paper/section it goes. So it is with this logic that I say I am upset and disappointed that this paper feels a losing boys’ team is more important and more interesting than a winning girls’ team. Have a little school pride. Let’s talk up and reward those who do well with the front-page slot.
