The UAA women’s volleyball team took home victories in four of the five sets played during the first scrimmage of the season Saturday.
The Lady Seawolves faced off against the Seawolves Alumni, a team of former UAA players.
Annually, the Seawolves Alumni return to challenge the new Lady Seawolves’ prestige as college athletes in a friendly, yet competitive, atmosphere
McKenzie Moss, who played outside hitter from 2008-2011 and played for the Seawolf Alumni team for the first time, said, “It’s kind of something you look forward to doing as a player.”
She said it’s a Seawolf tradition for players to return in this way to check out the new team and have the opportunity to touch the ball.
Libero and defensive specialist Jordan Bush, who played with Moss and former outside hitter Jackie Matthisen last year, said, “It’s funny to see them on the other side of the net,” but likened it to practicing with them. She said Matthisen still helps the team practice and helps them train.
All five sets were played during the game and the Seawolves came out on top 4-1.
Katelynn Zanders, outside hitter and middle blocker, and outside hitter Julia Mackey led the team with 15 kills apiece.
Setter Kimya Jafroudi led the team in hitting percentage with three kills, one error and five total attempts for a percentage of .400.
Breanne Sytnyk, middle blocker and right side hitter, was a close second with a .33 hit percentage derived from four kills, one error and nine total attempts.
The Lady Seawolves won the first set 25-19. The second set was longer with a score of 33-31.
The Seawolf Alumni team won the third set 25-23.
Matthisen led the scoring throughout the game with 13 kills, followed closely by Moss with 12 and Calli Scott with 10.
The Lady Seawolves went on to win the rest of the sets, with a final score of 25-23 and 25-18.
The regular season begins Aug. 31 at the Cal State Monterey Bay Invitational at Otter Classic in Seaside, Calif., where they will play four matches.
