Nilsson signs pro contract in Spain
Former UAA basketball standout Maria Nilsson has recently signed a contract to play professionally in Europe, joining the EFMO team in Spain's second division.
The club, located in Aviles on the northern coast of Spain, finished sixth in last season's LF2 league standings and finished third the previous year.
Nilsson was a second-team All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference honoree last season as she helped UAA to a 30-5 record and a berth in the NCAA Division II semifinals. The Seawolves' third-leading scorer (9.6 ppg) shot 38.6 percent from three-point range while sinking a school-record 83 treys.
In her two seasons at UAA, Nilsson was a regular starter for the Seawolves as they posted an overall 53-11 mark, including a pair of Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout titles.
Kiplagat nabs academic honor
UAA standout David Kiplagat added to his list of academic achievements when the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association named him to its 2008 Division II Men's All-Academic Track and Field team on July 16.
The USTFCCCA honor brings the Kapsabet, Kenya, native's total of All-America awards to four (two athletic and two academic). The finance major also earned USTFCCCA DII All-Academic honors in cross country.
A total of 109 student-athletes representing 44 Division II institutions made up the men's 2008 All-Academic team. The USTFCCCA honors Division II individuals for their academic and athletic achievements during the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons. To qualify for the team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met the NCAA Division II Indoor or Outdoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard in their respective event.
