ANCHORAGE – One of the most storied college basketball tournaments in the nation and an Alaskan sporting tradition for nearly four decades, the Great Alaska Shootout is getting a new title sponsor in local telecommunications company GCI.
The announcement was made Wednesday in a joint press conference with GCI and the University of Alaska Anchorage – which has run the event since 1978 – in front of the tournament’s future home at the Alaska Airlines Center.
“We are thrilled to have GCI become our title sponsor for the Great Alaska Shootout,” said UAA Athletic Director Keith Hackett. “GCI is deeply rooted in our state and will bring great energy and visibility to the tournament as we move into the Alaska Airlines Center. We look forward to working with GCI to continue the legacy of this iconic event in Alaska.”
“As an Alaska-based company, GCI is honored to become such a big part of the Great Alaska Shootout’s long-standing tradition and is looking forward to bringing new energy and life to this much-loved event,” said GCI Senior Vice President and General Manager of Consumer Services Paul Landes. “Our goal is to have the GCI Shootout once again be the most sought-after, sold-out event in the entire state. We plan to advance the local and national clout of the Great Alaska Shootout by bringing top-notch basketball programs from around the country to experience our great state and compete with our always-talented Seawolves.”
GCI becomes just the second title sponsor in the Shootout’s existence, succeeding the Carrs/Safeway family of grocery stores, which sponsored the tournament from 1994-2013.
The 2014 GCI Great Alaska Shootout will again feature a four-team women’s field and an eight-team men’s field, highlighted by both UAA Seawolves squads. Visiting schools for this year’s event – set for Nov. 25-29 – are Boise State, Long Beach State and Yale on the women’s side, plus Colorado State, Mercer, Missouri State, Pacific, Rice, Santa Barbara and Washington State on the men’s side.
