Fixing the pieces of broken bad habits

Whether you’ve been dumped or you’ve
dumped someone else, or whether you listen
to angry punk rock or sad sappy melodies,
there is an endless list of songs for those of
us recovering from a breakup. Here’s what I
think helps. Sometimes.
FOR THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN DUMPED:
1. CRYING – DON MCLEAN
For those of you who love oldies, this song
is ideal. McLean speaks of the touch of her
hand, and he now loves her even more as his
voice screams of heartache. He will never
stop crying.
2. AIN’T NO SUNSHINE WHEN SHE’S
GONE – BILL WITHERS
A man singing his heart out and trying to
mend a broken heart is enough to make the
tears fl ow. Withers sings of the pain and cries
as “every time she goes away.”
3. LITTLEST THINGS – LILY ALLEN
A reminiscent song about the way things
used to be is sure to spark memories and
remind us all of past relationships. It will
probably result in tears and tissues as Allen
lets us know that things were fun and lovely,
but that we may never speak to them again.
4. IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND –
GORDON LIGHTFOOT
Lightfoot sings of the past and of the
memories this couple once shared. He tells
her he’ll always love her, and it’s almost as
though he’s begging for her back.
5. PIECE OF MY HEART – JANIS JOPLIN
Everyone’s felt this feeling of getting
your heart broken. He’s breaking her heart
left and right, and now she’s begging him,
“Take another little piece of my heart.” The
agonizing vocals and striking guitar solos
make this a great pick for someone whose
heart has been ripped out of their chest,
stepped on, and shattered.
FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DUMPED SOMEONE:
1. SMILE – LILY ALLEN
The quirky lyrics and upbeat melody don’t
convey a breakup song, but it’s obvious that
Lily’s glad it’s over. As she sings, “When
I see you cry, it makes me smile” about
her ex-boyfriend, its funny, tragic, and
empowering. She’s glad its over, and she’s not
afraid to tell everyone.
2. TEARS DRY ON THEIR OWN – AMY
WINEHOUSE
Girl, she is going to get over him.
Winehouse may have some troubles (health,
man or drugs) but the girl knows breakups.
She provides strength for those of us who’ve
dumped someone, and she knows her tears
will dry eventually.
3. TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT – THE STROKES
A peppy melody that makes you want to
dance, this song is about a guy who’s telling
his girl that she can either be with him or the
other guys out there. He tells her to go and to
just take it or leave it, before warning her that
the other guy is just going to end up letting her
down. The song is fun, and the lyrics scream
honesty.
4. BRICK – BEN FOLDS FIVE
A bit more melodramatic than the songs
listed above, this one describes the loneliness
that both sides can feel. Urged by his friends
to be honest and tell her the truth, he does and
it’s over. Sad and heart wrenching, loneliness
can drag you down, but eventually, you’ll get
back up.
5. EVERYDAY I LOVE YOU LESS AND
LESS – KAISER CHIEFS
It’s what we all want – to forget that person
as each day passes. This is an upbeat and
funny song, even if it’s arguable that it’s about
his woman on the side and not his girlfriend.
No matter! It provides hope and it’s bound to
bring you up when you’re feeling down.
