Vigil remembers 30 years of HIV
December 6th, 2011It’s been 30 years since the first case of HIV appeared in San Francisco and New York. Gay men in these cities were entering hospitals with rare forms of cancer and unusual infections, despite being young and in their 20s. With so little known about the disease—what to call, where it came from, how it functioned—it was first characterized as a disease applicable only to homosexuals, hence the common term doctors used to describe it in its first years of existence: Gay related immune deficiency.

UAA Heifer Club fundraiser surprising success
November 29th, 2011UAA’s Heifer Club was surprised to raise 1,400 dollars at their first alterative gift fair last Saturday.
The group was hoping to raise at least 500 dollars.

November 8th, 2011Occupy Anchorage protestors were prepared for a late night run-in with the police last Wednesday night.
Amber Helman said that around 1 p.m. that day, police had “coffee with us,” and discussed their first amendment rights. The police told them they would be back when the park closed to review with any new protestors. From 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. the group roughly doubled from ten to around 20 people, but no police showed up.
