Australian band Grey Daturas rocks Anchorage for 3 nights

Sponsored by Reverse Retro, Grey Daturas performed at the Paddleboat Café, Crossroads Lounge and Kodiak Bar Oct. 18-21. Also performing were local bands Los Gran Torinos, Fats Tunamelt, Over/Under, Wolf Blitzer and Korupture. Hailing from Melbourne, the three-member noise-rock band has been touring Europe and the U.S. since until December. The group has been releasing albums since 2001, including “Path of Niners,” the band’s latest.

Bodybuilding championships flaunt fitness and figure

The 2007 National Physique Committee held the Alaska Crystal Cup fitness, figure and bodybuilding championships at the Egan Center on Oct. 20. The NPC is a national organization that sponsors several annual bodybuilding competitions. The show featured bodybuilding champions Kim “Kong” Farrison, Victor Martinez and Valentina Chepiga. Chepiga, an Anchorage female bodybuilder, recently competed at Ms. Olympia. Bodybuilding and fitness photographer Mark Mason was present to take photos and video of the competitors. Fitness and bodybuilding champions received an engraved Crystal Cup as well as prizes from sponsors including Natural Pantry, Polaris Gym and Skinny Raven Sports. An after party for spectators and competitors at Chilkoot Charlie’s followed the competition.

Trombone concert features other instruments as well

UAA music education professor Christopher Sweeney presented a solo trombone concert on Oct. 21 in the Fine Arts Building Recital Hall. The program featured a sonata and concerto for the piano and trombone, as well as modern works with a combination of singing and speaking through the brass instrument. Also featured during the concert were pianist Dean Epperson, trumpeter Linn Weeda and Cheryl Pierce on horn.

Sweeney has taught at UAA for the past three years and serves as the head of the music education program. He has performed as a solo trombonist with the University Wind Ensemble, as well as a participating member of the Chugach Brass and University Trombone Trio.
