Hockey captain Matt Bailey on the hot-handed Seawolves

The Seawolf hockey team is off to a hot start at 3-1, with big wins over #10 Quinnipiac and #12 Denver this year. Co-captain Matt Bailey is pacing the team with four goals heading into Western Collegiate Hockey Association play, and the senior co-captain took a moment to talk to the Northern Light about the Seawolves’ hot start:

TNL: You guys got off to a great start after some major offseason changes. How was this team able to come together so quickly?

Bailey: I think everyone was really excited coming into the season with all the new changes and Coach Matt (Thomas) is just a really motivational guy. It’s a good group of guys, a really close knit group and we’re playing within the system and it’s paying off so far.”

What’s it like playing for Coach Thomas in his first year?
Matt is just a really high-energy guy. He’s the happiest guy at the rink, and it makes coming to the rink a lot nicer. He’s very motivational and detail-oriented. We’re trying to stick to his system, and it’s been really good.

As a senior co-captain and team leader in goals so far, do you feel like your role has changed this year?
I don’t think my role has changed too much. But obviously, it’s nice to have success at the start of the season. Being 3-1 is a credit my teammates and our team game, and it’s been nice so far.

WCHA play opens up for you guys in Bowling Green (Ohio) this weekend. What can you expect in conference play?
Bowling Green had a really good weekend. We haven’t done too much studying on them with the bye week, but we’re going to look at them in great detail this week. They’re a good team, and first weekend of WCHA play, you want to start strong so two big games in Bowling Green.

The ‘Wolves play at Bowling Green Nov. 1-2. Live stats can be tracked at www.wcha.com/men/index.php.
