The four-piece band that is Filthybird is anything but filthy; at least when it comes to their new album “Songs for Other People.” Coming from their highly praised previous album, “Southern Skies,” this album is nothing but sweet vocals mixed with powerful, yet soulful, rhythms.
The lead singer, Renee Mendoza, has a voice that seems to have a light and breezy sound to it that works well with the inventive and fresh quality of the rhythm section, which is made up of Mendoza’s own husband, Brian Haran, along with Michael Duehring and Otto Hauser.
It’s hard not to get wrapped into this album with songs such as “Gravity.” The song starts of with a relaxing melody and shortly thereafter sets you up with a catching set of vocals. The person that best comes to mind when thinking about the vocals of Mendoza is Zooey Deschanel from She and Him; Mendoza has sort of the same folksy sound, which is a good thing. The song leads the way for the rest of the album.
In its entirety, “Songs for Other People” leaves the listener in a state a pure relaxation. It would be the perfect album to listen to after a long day, when all you need is a little time to clear your mind and unwind.
